How do you calculate cumulative GPA?

Multiply your current GPA by the credits it covers, do the same for the new term, add the two, and divide by all the credits together. In the example, 3.20 over 45 credits plus a 3.60 term of 15 credits gives a new cumulative GPA of 3.30 (+0.10).

Worked example: a 3.60 term on top of a 3.20 GPA

  1. Quality points so far: 3.20 × 45 credits = 144.
  2. This term: 3.60 × 15 credits = 54.
  3. Add them: 144 + 54 = 198 quality points over 60 credits.
  4. New cumulative GPA: 198 ÷ 60 = 3.30.

Your term GPA was well above your overall GPA, yet the overall GPA moved only +0.10: the 45 credits you already have outweigh one term.

Which credits to enter

Use the credits that carry a grade, often shown on a transcript as "GPA hours" or "quality hours". Leave out pass/fail courses and, at most schools, transfer credit, which counts toward graduation but not toward your GPA. Don't know this term's GPA yet? Choose Enter my courses and type each course's grade, or work it out first with the GPA calculator.

Questions students ask

Why does my cumulative GPA barely move after a great semester?
Because it is an average over every credit. The more credits you already have, the less one term can move it. A 4.0 term moves a first-year GPA a lot, and a senior's only a little.
Can I average my semester GPAs instead?
Only if every semester had the same number of credits. Otherwise a light semester counts as much as a heavy one, and the answer is wrong. This calculator weights each term by its credits.
Does a retaken course change my cumulative GPA?
At many schools the new grade replaces the old one. To model that, take the old course's credits and quality points out of your current figures first, or ask your registrar how your school handles repeats.

Sources and method

  • 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades (A+ = 4.0). Source: UC Santa Cruz General Catalog: Grade Points, checked October 18, 2026. The same values (A 4.0, A- 3.7 ... D- 0.7, F 0) are used by Indiana University and the University of Tennessee. P and NP are not counted in GPA; I and IP carry no grade points until a final grade replaces them.
  • Formula. A credit-weighted average: (current GPA × current credits + term GPA × term credits) ÷ total credits. Grade points for "Enter my courses" come from the scale listed above.
