Weighting and grading scale
0.5 is North Carolina's statewide rule and a common one elsewhere. Check your school's profile or handbook.
1.0 is the common rule: North Carolina's state weighting gives AP, IB and college classes one extra quality point. An F earns 0 at every level.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA counts every A as 4.0, whatever the class. A weighted GPA adds extra points for harder classes: commonly 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP, IB and college classes, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0. In the example above, the same grades give an unweighted GPA of 3.20 and a weighted GPA of 3.50.

Worked example: 5 classes, one honors and one AP

The working table under the calculator lists each class with its points before and after weighting.

  1. Letters: percentages turn into letters on the College Board chart (90–100 is an A, 80–89 a B, 70–79 a C).
  2. Unweighted: add the points, 16, and divide by 5 credits = 3.20.
  3. Weighted: add 0.5 to the honors grade and 1 to the AP grade first: 17.50 ÷ 5 = 3.50.

Weighted GPA rules differ by school

There is no national rule. North Carolina sets one for every public high school in the state: honors classes add 0.5 and AP, IB and college classes add 1.0, and an F earns 0 at any level. Many other schools use the same numbers; some weight only AP classes, and some cap the weighted GPA. Open Weighting above and change the extra points to match your school's profile or handbook.

Which GPA do colleges use?

Both appear on many transcripts. The College Board notes that colleges may recalculate your GPA with their own rules, for example by leaving out non-core classes such as physical education. That is why it helps to know both numbers. For college grades, use the college GPA calculator.

Its chart lists D as 66–69 and E/F as below 65, which leaves 65 itself unassigned; we count 65 as a D. The chart has no plus or minus grades, so B+ counts as a B on this scale.

Green Bay gives the plus and minus grades in thirds of a point (A- 3.67, B+ 3.33); many schools round these to 3.7 and 3.3, so check your own handbook. F* (fail, no credit), P (pass), INC (incomplete), MX (medical excuse) and NG (no grade) are not counted in GPA. The page sets no honors or AP weighting: the weighting boxes in the calculator are your school's rules. Not counted in GPA: F*, P, INC, MX, NG.

Questions students ask

Can a weighted GPA be higher than 4.0?
Yes. With 1.0 extra for AP classes, straight A's in AP classes average 5.0. That is why a weighted GPA above 4.0 is normal and an unweighted one is not.
Does an F in an AP class get the extra point?
No. Under North Carolina's state table, an F earns 0 points in a regular, honors or AP class alike, and this calculator does the same.
My school uses plus and minus grades. What do I enter?
Open Weighting and grading scale and pick the plus/minus scale: A- counts 3.67 and B+ 3.33, as at Green Bay Area Public Schools. The College Board and 10-point charts have no plus or minus grades, so on those a B+ counts as a B and you will see a note. If your school rounds to 3.7 and 3.3, type the grade points (3.7) instead of the letter; the weight is still added.
What should I enter for credits?
Use the credits on your report card. At many high schools a full-year class is 1 credit and a one-semester class is 0.5. If every class counts the same, leave them all at 1.
