What do I need on my final?
Take the grade you want, subtract what your work so far already gives you (your current grade × the share of the class that isn't the final), and divide by the final's weight. With 84% now and a final worth 30%, you need 87.33% on the final to finish with 85%.
Needed = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight
Worked example: 84% now, final worth 30%
- What you keep: everything but the final is 0.70 of the grade, so 84 × 0.70 = 58.80 points are already yours.
- What's missing: 85 − 58.80 = 26.20 points must come from the final.
- Score needed: 26.20 ÷ 0.30 = 87.33%.
For other targets: 104% to finish with 90%, 70.67% for 80%, 37.33% for 70%. Even a perfect 100% on this final would give 88.8%.
If you need more than 100%
When the score needed is above 100%, that grade is out of reach unless the final can be scored above 100% (with extra credit, for example). The calculator shows what you would finish with on a perfect final, so you can see the best grade still possible. Ask your teacher about extra credit or a curve before the exam rather than after.
Where to find the numbers
Your grade now is in your school's grade portal (Canvas, PowerSchool, Blackboard or similar). The final's weight is in the syllabus, for example "Final exam 20%". If your class is graded by categories, work out your current grade with the weighted grade calculator first.
