How do you calculate GPA?

Turn each letter grade into grade points (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 and so on), multiply by the course's credit hours to get quality points, add them up, and divide by the total credit hours. In the example above, 48.30 quality points over 14 credits is a GPA of 3.45.

Every step, with weighted and cumulative examples: how to calculate GPA.

Worked example: 4 courses, 14 credits

The working table under the calculator shows each course; here is how it adds up.

  1. Grade points: look up each letter on the 4.0 scale (table below).
  2. Quality points: grade points × credits for each course, then add them: 48.30.
  3. GPA: 48.30 ÷ 14 credits = 3.45.

A 4-credit course moves your GPA more than a 3-credit one: the same B+ is worth more quality points when the course carries more credit hours.

What counts toward your GPA, and what doesn't

  • Pass/fail (P, NP) grades carry no grade points, so they are left out. Pick "P (not counted)" in the grade box and the course is skipped.
  • Incomplete (I, IP) grades count only once a final letter grade replaces them.
  • Retaken courses: many schools replace the earlier grade. This calculator counts whatever you enter, so leave out the attempt your school has replaced.

P and NP are not counted in GPA; I and IP carry no grade points until a final grade replaces them. Not counted in GPA: P, NP, I, IP.

Questions students ask

What is a good college GPA?
It depends on your goal: scholarships, honors and graduate programs often set their own minimum. For a sense of the middle, the College Board puts the average GPA across US colleges at about 3.1.
Is an A+ worth more than 4.0?
Not on this scale: the University of California, Santa Cruz catalog, like many others, gives an A+ the same 4.0 as an A. Some schools give an A+ 4.3. If yours does, your GPA will be a little higher than shown here.
Do pass/fail classes count in my GPA?
No. A P or NP carries no grade points, so it changes neither your quality points nor your GPA credits. It may still count toward the credits you need to graduate.
Why is my GPA on the transcript slightly different?
We show two decimals, rounded. Some registrars cut off (truncate) the third decimal instead of rounding, and some count repeated courses or transfer credit differently. Your transcript is the official figure.
